The Artist – Shiga Naoya

Bihar Board Class 12 English Chapter 6 The Artist

1. About the Author – Shiga Naoya

Shiga Naoya (1883–1971) was a major Japanese short-story writer of the twentieth century. His writing is known for its attention to ordinary human life and the inner behaviour of characters.

In The Artist, this approach becomes especially important because the story is not built around a complicated adventure. Instead, a small incident involving a schoolboy and his hobby gradually reveals a much larger problem: adults may fail to recognize a child's individual talent.

3. Who is Seibei? – Seibei

Seibei is a twelve-year-old schoolboy living in a small harbour town in Japan. He is still in primary school, but he has developed an unusually strong interest in gourds.

He does not merely collect gourds casually. He observes their shape, selects the ones he likes, prepares them carefully and spends considerable time polishing them. His attention to small differences shows that his interest has moved beyond an ordinary pastime.

Deep Point:

Seibei did not like every gourd equally. He preferred gourds that were even and symmetrical. He had developed his own sense of what looked beautiful and valuable.

This detail is important because it shows that Seibei was not simply collecting objects randomly. He was developing an artistic eye.

उसे विशेष रूप से even and symmetrical gourds पसंद थे।

Analysis:

5. Seibei Gourds

After bringing a gourd home, Seibei carefully worked on it. He made a neat opening, removed the seeds and used tea-leaves to deal with the unpleasant smell. He then polished the surface carefully.

The important point is not the individual technical steps alone. The sequence shows concentration and care. Seibei was willing to spend time on a small object simply because he found value in perfecting it.

Student Learning:

One of the memorable moments of the story occurs when Seibei sees the bald, elongated head of an old man near the beach and, for a moment, mistakes it for a splendid gourd.

The incident is humorous, but it also reveals something about Seibei's mind. He is so deeply interested in gourds that he notices the shape of ordinary objects through the eyes of a collector.

Why is this scene useful?

7. Five-Inch Gourd – कहानी का Turning Point

At one point Seibei discovers a small gourd of about five inches that strongly attracts him. The gourd is being sold by an old woman, and Seibei does not have enough money with him at that moment.

He asks her to keep it for him, goes home to arrange the money and then returns to buy it. This incident clearly demonstrates how seriously he takes his interest.

Character Insight:

Seibei takes the special gourd to school and begins polishing it under his desk during an ethics class. The teacher notices him and becomes angry.

From the teacher's point of view, Seibei is neglecting the lesson. However, the teacher also judges the hobby itself negatively and considers gourd collecting an inappropriate pastime.

Balanced Interpretation:

9. Ethics Teacher का Character Analysis

The ethics teacher represents a rigid adult viewpoint. He sees education primarily through the expected behaviour of a student and has little sympathy for Seibei's unusual interest.

His reaction is significant because he does not try to understand what the hobby means to the child. Instead, he interprets it as a foolish or effeminate pastime.

Important:

10. Seibei के Father का Character Analysis

Seibei's father is worried about his son's future. He wants him to become a useful and educated person and does not see value in the boy's passion for gourds.

After hearing the teacher's complaint, the father's reaction becomes extreme. He beats Seibei and systematically smashes the gourds that the boy has collected and carefully prepared.

Deeper Reading:

11. Central Conflict – Child vs Adult World

The story does not require us to conclude that students should ignore their studies. Seibei's mistake in the classroom is real: he is polishing a gourd during a lesson.

The deeper question is whether every non-academic interest should be treated as useless. The story strongly invites the reader to question that assumption.

Student-First Lesson:

Literary Device – Irony

The strongest irony in the story appears after Seibei's father destroys his collection. The gourd that adults treated as worthless is later sold by a porter to a curio-dealer for fifty yen, and the curio-dealer later sells it to a wealthy collector for six hundred yen.

The irony is not simply about money. It exposes the difference between what the adults assumed about Seibei's hobby and what other people later recognized in the object.

14. 10 Sen → 50 Yen → 600 Yen: Price

Important Interpretation:

Emotional Turning Point

Character

After he is forced to give up collecting gourds, Seibei becomes engrossed in painting pictures. He does not remain permanently bitter toward his teacher or father.

The ending is deliberately quiet. Instead of presenting a dramatic rebellion, the story shows that the creative impulse has simply found another outlet.

17. Why is the story called “The Artist”?

The title is significant because Seibei's artistic nature exists before he begins painting. His careful selection and treatment of gourds already show observation, taste, patience and a desire to create something beautiful.

When gourds are taken away, he turns to painting. Therefore, “The Artist” describes Seibei's creative personality rather than merely naming an activity.

Character Basic Nature Story
Seibei Creative, observant, passionate, quiet Childhood talent और individual interest का प्रतिनिधि
Father Practical, strict, future-conscious Traditional parental expectations
Ethics Teacher Rigid and judgmental Institutional adult judgement
Porter Practical and commercially motivated Gourd

19. Theme 1 – Childhood Talent

20. Theme 2 – Adult Expectations

The adults around Seibei believe that a child should spend time in activities that appear useful according to conventional standards. Seibei's hobby does not fit that expectation.

The conflict therefore arises not because Seibei lacks ability, but because the adults do not assign value to the type of ability he possesses.

21. Theme 3 – Education और Creativity का Balance

Student-first interpretation:

22. Theme 4 – Passion और Persistence

Seibei's interest is persistent. When one creative outlet is removed, another eventually appears. This is important because the story separates the artist's creative impulse from the particular object he works on.

23. Theme 5 – Social Judgement

24. Critical Analysis –

क्या Seibei की hobby वास्तव में “waste of time” थी?

26. Complete Summary in English

The Artist by Shiga Naoya is the story of Seibei, a twelve-year-old Japanese schoolboy who has an unusual passion for collecting and preparing gourds. He lives in a small harbour town and spends his free time looking for gourds that match his artistic taste. He particularly likes gourds that are even and symmetrical.

Seibei does not merely collect them. He carefully prepares the gourds, removes their seeds, deals with their unpleasant smell and polishes them. His interest shows patience, observation and a strong sense of beauty.

One day he finds a small gourd that he considers especially attractive. He arranges the money to buy it and becomes deeply attached to it. He even takes it to school and starts polishing it during an ethics class. The teacher catches him and reacts angrily. He considers such a pastime inappropriate and complains to Seibei's family.

Seibei's father is also strongly disapproving. He believes that his son should concentrate on useful education rather than spend time on gourds. After hearing the teacher's complaint, he beats Seibei and destroys his collection with a hammer.

The confiscated gourd, however, follows a very different path. The teacher gives it to a porter. The porter later sells it to a curio-dealer for fifty yen. The curio-dealer subsequently sells it to a wealthy collector for six hundred yen.

This creates the central irony of the story. The hobby that adults had dismissed as useless had produced an object that others considered highly valuable.

Seibei eventually gives up collecting gourds and becomes absorbed in painting pictures. The story ends by showing that his father also begins to criticize this new activity. Seibei's creative impulse, however, has not disappeared; it has simply found another form.

27. Complete Summary in Hindi

28. Central Idea –

The central idea of the story is that a child's talent may be misunderstood when adults judge it only by conventional standards. Seibei's passion for gourds is treated as a useless distraction, but his careful observation and craftsmanship reveal an artistic ability.

The story also shows that education and discipline are important, but they should ideally coexist with sensitivity toward individual talent.

29. Moral of the Story –

30. Character Sketch of Seibei

Seibei is a sensitive and talented twelve-year-old boy. He is deeply interested in gourds and develops a refined preference for even and symmetrical shapes. His hobby requires patience and concentration, which shows that he is not merely playing with objects.

He is also quiet. When his father destroys his collection, he does not launch a dramatic protest. Instead, he gradually moves toward painting. This shift reveals the strength of his creative nature.

Most importantly, Seibei's artistic quality exists independently of the specific hobby of collecting gourds. When one outlet disappears, another one emerges.

31. Important Long Answer Questions

Q1. How does “The Artist” show the conflict between a child's talent and adult expectations?

Answer in English:

The conflict is shown through Seibei's passion for collecting and preparing gourds. Seibei is only twelve, but he has developed a remarkable interest in the shape and quality of gourds. He carefully selects and polishes them. To him, this activity is meaningful.

The adults around him, however, judge the activity according to conventional expectations. The teacher considers it an unsuitable pastime, particularly when Seibei does it during class. His father also believes that such an interest will distract him from useful education.

The conflict becomes severe when the father destroys Seibei's collection. The later sale of the confiscated gourd for fifty yen and eventually six hundred yen creates irony and suggests that Seibei's artistic judgement had been underestimated.

Thus, the story shows that discipline is necessary, but adults should also be sensitive enough to recognize and guide individual talent rather than automatically suppressing it.

Q2. Explain the irony in “The Artist”.

Answer in English:

The major irony lies in the difference between the way Seibei's gourd was valued at home and the way it was valued in the market. Seibei's teacher considered his hobby foolish, and his father destroyed his collection. Yet the confiscated gourd was later sold by a porter for fifty yen and then by a curio-dealer to a wealthy collector for six hundred yen.

The irony becomes stronger because Seibei had originally recognized the gourd's special quality. The adults who dismissed his interest did not recognize the value that other buyers later saw.

Therefore, the irony is not merely financial. It is about the failure to recognize talent and value at the right time.

Q3. Sketch the character of Seibei as an artist.

Answer in English:

Seibei is a young but highly observant artist. He has a clear preference for even and symmetrical gourds and can distinguish qualities that other people may overlook. He carefully prepares and polishes the gourds, showing patience and concentration.

His artistic nature is not destroyed when his collection is smashed. Instead, he turns toward painting. This is important because it proves that his creativity is deeper than a simple hobby. He has an inner need to create and observe beauty.

Seibei is also quiet and does not remain bitter toward the people who hurt him. His ability to redirect his creative energy makes him an interesting and memorable character.

Q4. What does the story teach us about children's hobbies and education?

Answer in English:

The story teaches that education and discipline are important, but a child's interests should not automatically be dismissed as useless. Children need guidance because they must learn to balance studies and personal interests. At the same time, adults should try to understand whether a hobby is revealing a genuine ability.

Seibei's case demonstrates the danger of judging a child's interest only from an adult's conventional viewpoint. His gourd hobby eventually leads us to recognize his artistic eye, and when gourds are removed, he turns to painting.

The ideal lesson is therefore balance: responsibility should be taught without unnecessarily destroying curiosity and creativity.

39. Bihar Board 2027 Exam Strategy

1. Facts याद करें: Author, Seibei की age, hobby, place और important events।

2. Story sequence समझें: Gourd collection → special gourd → classroom incident → teacher's complaint → father's anger → collection destroyed → gourd sold → painting.

5. Theme answer में “hard work” ही repeat न करें: Childhood talent, adult expectations, education vs creativity और social judgement जैसे specific themes लिखें।

6. English answer simple रखें: Complex vocabulary दिखाने से ज्यादा important है कि answer logically correct और story-based हो।

40. 5-Mark Answer लिखने का Best Structure

  1. Introduction: Story और question का direct introduction।
  5. Conclusion: Story का balanced message लिखें।
Example:

अगर question है — “How does the story show the importance of recognizing talent?”

41. Students की Common Mistakes

Seibei की सबसे important qualities हैं उसकी specific observation, preference for symmetrical gourds और creative interest।

  14. What conflict does the story present?
  15. What lesson can students learn from Seibei?

45. Final Analysis – Chapter

Deeper question

46. Final Conclusion

Study with responsibility, observe with curiosity, practise with patience and respect your genuine abilities.
