Bihar Board Class 10 Physics Chapter 6 Notes – ऊर्जा के स्रोत (Sources of Energy)

Almost every useful activity around us requires energy. Lighting a bulb, rotating a fan, cooking food, moving a vehicle, and lifting water may look like different activities, but each of them depends on energy obtained from some source.

Imagine that electricity fails in a village at night. The fan stops, the mobile phone cannot be charged, and the water pump also stops. After some time, a generator is started and the activities begin again. The important question is not only where the electricity came from, but also which form of stored energy in the source was converted into electrical energy.

A source of energy is not simply a substance or natural system from which energy is obtained. We must also understand the form in which the energy is available and how it is converted into a useful form.

A source of energy is a natural material, phenomenon, or system from which energy can be obtained for useful work. The Sun, flowing water, wind, wood, coal, petroleum, natural gas, and uranium are different examples.

Sun, wind, water, coal, and other sources.

Light, thermal, chemical, kinetic, and other forms.

Producing light, motion, heating, and other useful effects.

A useful way to understand an energy source is to follow the forms of energy involved before useful work is obtained. For example, the chemical energy of coal does not directly light a bulb. Coal is first burned to produce heat, and in a power plant this energy passes through several stages before becoming electrical energy.

A source cannot be considered good simply because it contains a large amount of energy. We must also consider how easily the energy can be obtained, how safely it can be used, how convenient it is to transport and store, and how much environmental impact it creates.

Criterion Why it matters
Energy availability The source should provide a useful amount of energy.
Ease of extraction Obtaining the energy should be reasonably practical.
Storage and transport The energy should be manageable for storage and transport.
Safety Risks should remain manageable during use.
Environmental impact Lower impact on air, water, and land is preferable.

An important way of classifying energy sources is to ask how quickly nature can replace what humans use. Sources that can be replenished continuously or within a relatively short period through natural processes are called renewable sources.

In contrast, sources with limited reserves that took a very long time to form are called non-renewable sources. If they are consumed much faster than nature can replace them, their reserves gradually decrease.

Sunlight, wind, flowing water, and biomass are examples of sources that natural processes can continuously or repeatedly replenish.

Sources such as coal, petroleum, and natural gas have limited reserves and cannot be replaced on a human time scale after rapid consumption.

Renewable does not automatically mean that obtaining energy from the source has no impact. For example, a large dam may affect land, river flow, and local ecosystems. Therefore, calling a source renewable does not mean that every environmental effect disappears.

The Sun is one of the most important natural sources of energy for Earth. We receive light and heat from the Sun. Plants use sunlight to make food, and this process forms the basis of many food chains on Earth.

Solar cookers use solar energy mainly as heat to warm and cook food.

Solar water heaters use solar heat to raise the temperature of water.

Solar cells can directly convert light energy into electrical energy.

Think: If a solar cell generates electricity during the day, how can electricity be supplied at night? This shows the difference between having an energy source and having energy available at the required time. Generation and storage are two different challenges.

Moving air possesses kinetic energy. When strong wind rotates the blades of a wind turbine, the kinetic energy of the air is transferred into mechanical motion. This motion can then be used in a suitable system to generate electrical energy.

The usefulness of wind energy depends on wind conditions at a location. It is not enough to know that wind exists. The speed, consistency, and availability of wind must also be suitable for useful energy generation.

Water stored at a height possesses potential energy. As the water flows downward, its potential energy changes into kinetic energy. The moving water can rotate a turbine, and a generator connected to the turbine can produce electrical energy.

A useful conceptual distinction is that the dam itself does not directly produce electrical energy. It helps store water at a suitable height and control its flow. The turbine and generator arrangement performs the conversion into electrical energy.

Materials obtained from plants and other biological matter can be used as energy sources. Wood, agricultural residues, and certain animal wastes are examples. The chemical energy stored in biomass can be converted into useful energy through different processes.

In rural areas, using agricultural residues for energy can be an example of using locally available resources. However, the method of using biomass should also be evaluated for smoke, waste, and other environmental effects.

Coal, petroleum, and natural gas are called fossil fuels. They formed from ancient organic matter through natural processes over very long periods. Today they are used in transportation, industries, electricity generation, and many other activities.

Source Main use Basic energy form
Coal Heating and electricity generation Chemical energy
Petroleum Transport fuels and other products Chemical energy
Natural gas Fuel and electricity generation Chemical energy

One important characteristic of fossil fuels is that their reserves are limited. Their combustion can also release gases and other pollutants. Therefore, using fossil fuels is not only an energy question; it is also connected with resource conservation and the environment.

Very large amounts of energy can be obtained from changes occurring in the nuclei of certain heavy atoms. When controlled properly, this energy can be used in nuclear power plants for electricity generation.

While studying nuclear energy, a student should consider not only the large amount of energy involved but also questions of control, safety, waste management, and plant operation.

Source Renewability Basic mechanism
Sun Renewable Light and heat
Wind Renewable Motion of air
Water Renewable Potential and kinetic energy of water
Biomass Renewable Chemical energy
Coal Non-renewable Chemical energy
Petroleum Non-renewable Chemical energy
Nuclear fuel Limited resource Nuclear energy

If a village receives strong sunlight during the day but needs more electricity at night, why is the availability of solar energy alone not the complete solution?

Hint: Think about the difference between when the source is available and when energy is needed.

If wind is blowing, does it mean that a wind power plant will produce the same amount of electricity all the time?

Hint: Consider changes in wind speed.

If a source is renewable, does every project based on that source automatically have zero environmental impact?

Hint: Distinguish between the source itself and the complete process used to obtain energy.

Renewable does not mean that unlimited energy can be obtained from the source at every moment. Availability can depend on natural conditions.

The Sun is a source, while light and heat are forms of energy obtained from it. Similarly, wind is a source and the kinetic energy associated with its motion is a form of energy.

A dam helps store and control water. The turbine and generator system plays the important role in converting the energy of water into electricity.

On a sunny day, place a dark-colored metal object and a light-colored object in sunlight for some time. Compare their temperatures by touch or with a suitable thermometer. The purpose is to observe that energy received from sunlight can affect the temperature of materials.

Safety: Using a thermometer is safer than directly touching a hot object.

Question: Why are fossil fuels called non-renewable?

Answer: They take extremely long periods to form, while humans consume them much faster. Therefore, their reserves can decrease rapidly at the present rate of use.
