Bihar Board Class 10th Physics Chapter 5 –
Electric current and magnetism are closely connected. A current-carrying conductor can produce a magnetic field around itself.
A current-carrying conductor placed in an external magnetic field can experience a force. This effect is used in an electric motor to produce mechanical motion.
The reverse process is also possible. When the magnetic environment associated with a conductor changes appropriately, an induced current can be produced. This phenomenon is called electromagnetic induction and is used in generators.

English
A magnet produces a magnetic influence in the space around it. This region is called a magnetic field.
A bar magnet has two poles, conventionally called the north and south poles. Like poles repel and unlike poles attract.
A magnetic field is not directly visible, but its presence can be detected through its effects on magnetic materials, magnetic needles or other suitable objects.
(Magnetic Field Lines)
Field lines
Magnetic field lines are imaginary lines used to represent a magnetic field. The tangent to a field line gives the direction of the field at that point.
Closely spaced field lines indicate a relatively stronger magnetic field. Magnetic field lines do not normally intersect each other because a magnetic field at one point has a definite direction.
Oersted's observation showed that a current-carrying conductor can affect a nearby compass needle. This demonstrated a connection between electric current and magnetism.
4. Straight Current-Carrying Wire का Magnetic Field
Around a straight current-carrying conductor, magnetic field lines form concentric circles centered on the conductor.
The strength of the magnetic effect depends on the current and the distance from the conductor. Increasing current strengthens the magnetic field, while increasing distance generally reduces its strength.
5. Right Hand Thumb Rule
Curled Fingers = Magnetic Field
Hold the straight conductor with your right hand so that the thumb points in the direction of conventional current. The curled fingers show the direction of magnetic field around the conductor.
6. Current-Carrying Circular Loop
A circular current-carrying loop produces magnetic fields from all parts of the wire. Near the centre, these contributions combine in a systematic direction.
Increasing current or increasing the number of turns can strengthen the magnetic effect under suitable conditions.
7. Solenoid
Hindi Concept
A solenoid is a long coil consisting of many closely wound turns of insulated wire. When current flows through it, a strong and relatively uniform magnetic field can be produced inside the solenoid.
A current-carrying solenoid behaves approximately like a bar magnet, having a north-like end and a south-like end.
8. Electromagnet – Temporary Magnet
Electromagnet
- Turns
- Suitable magnetic core
An electromagnet is produced when a suitable magnetic core is placed inside a current-carrying coil. Its magnetic strength can be controlled by changing the current, number of turns and core arrangement.
Since its magnetic effect can be controlled electrically, electromagnets are useful in devices such as relays, electric bells, lifting magnets and many other systems.
9. Electromagnet
Electric Bell
Relay
Lifting Magnet
Electrical Devices
Electromagnets are useful where magnetic force needs to be switched, controlled or varied electrically. Examples include relays, electric bells, lifting magnets and control mechanisms.
10. Magnetic Field में Current-Carrying Conductor पर Force
Current
Magnetic Field
Force
A current-carrying conductor placed in an external magnetic field can experience a magnetic force.
The direction of the force depends on the direction of current and the magnetic field. This effect forms the basic principle of an electric motor.
11. Fleming’s Left Hand Rule
- First finger: Magnetic Field
- Second/Middle finger: Current
- Thumb: Force / Motion
Current → Middle Finger
Force → Thumb
| Part | Represents |
|---|---|
| Forefinger | Magnetic Field |
| Middle Finger | Current |
| Thumb | Force / Motion |
Fleming's Left Hand Rule gives the direction of force on a current-carrying conductor placed in a magnetic field.
- First finger → magnetic field
- Middle finger → current
- Thumb → force or motion
12. Electric Motor – Electricity से Motion कैसे?
Motor के मुख्य parts
| Part | काम |
|---|---|
| Armature / Coil | Current-carrying rotating part |
| Permanent Magnet | Magnetic field
- A current-carrying coil is placed in a magnetic field.
- Magnetic forces act on the two sides of the coil.
- The forces act in opposite directions and produce a turning effect.
- The coil rotates around its axis.
- The split ring helps reverse the effective current direction after each half-turn so that the rotation can continue.
13. Electric Motor
Electric Fan
Water Pump
Motor shaft mechanical motion देकर pump mechanism चलाती है।
Mixer
Machines
Electric motors are widely used wherever electrical energy needs to be converted into rotational or mechanical motion, such as in fans, pumps, mixers and many machines.
English: Opposite magnetic forces acting on the two sides of a current-carrying coil can produce a turning effect, causing the coil to rotate.
(Electromagnetic Induction)
Electromagnetic induction is the production of induced emf when the magnetic environment linked with a conductor changes.
If the circuit is closed, an induced current can flow.
The important point is the change in magnetic linkage, not simply the presence of a stationary magnet near the coil.
Observation
Expected observation |
|---|---|
Moving a magnet relative to a coil can produce an induced electrical effect. Reversing the motion can reverse the direction of the induced current. Keeping the magnetic arrangement unchanged does not maintain a continuous induced current.
17. Fleming’s Right Hand Rule
- Forefinger: Magnetic field
- Middle finger: Induced current
Field → First Finger
Induced Current → Middle Finger
| Rule | Used For | Main Direction |
|---|---|---|
| Fleming Left Hand | Motor | Force / Motion |
| Fleming Right Hand | Generator | Induced Current |
Fleming's Right Hand Rule is used to determine the direction of induced current when a conductor moves in a magnetic field.
- Thumb → motion of conductor
- Forefinger → magnetic field
- Middle finger → induced current
18. Electric Generator – Motion से Electricity कैसे?
Generator के प्रमुख parts
| Part | Function |
|---|---|
| Axle | Mechanical rotation
19. Generator की Working Step-by-Step
Mechanical Input
Magnetic Interaction
Induction
Electrical Output
Mechanical rotation changes the magnetic linkage of the rotating coil. This produces an induced emf. When the external circuit is closed, current can flow through it.
Electric Motor | Electric Generator |
|---|---|---|
Electrical energy → Mechanical energy | Mechanical energy → Electrical energy |
| मुख्य principle | Magnetic field में current-carrying conductor पर force | Electromagnetic induction |
| मुख्य rule | Fleming Left Hand Rule | Fleming Right Hand Rule |
| Input | Electrical | Mechanical |
| Output | Mechanical motion | Electrical energy |
Fan, pump, mixer | Power generation systems |
Motor = Electricity से Motion
Generator = Motion से Electricity
A split-ring commutator is associated with the basic DC motor arrangement, where it reverses the coil current after each half-turn.
Slip rings in a basic AC generator provide continuous electrical contact with the rotating coil.
22. Magnetic Field
Current
Turns
Magnetic Core
The magnetic effect of a coil can generally be strengthened by increasing current, increasing the number of turns and using a suitable magnetic core in an electromagnet.
Increasing current generally strengthens the magnetic effect produced by a current-carrying conductor. The exact field depends on the geometry, distance and material conditions as well.
24. Magnetic Field, Magnetic Force और Electromagnetic Induction
|---|---|---|
| Magnetic Field | Current या magnet के कारण space में magnetic influence का region | Current-carrying wire |
| Magnetic Force | Magnetic field में current-carrying conductor पर force | Electric motor |
| Electromagnetic Induction | Magnetic linkage में change से induced emf/current | Electric generator |

Application Questions
Daily-life device को उसके underlying magnetic principle से जोड़ें।
Questions
English: A current-carrying conductor produces a magnetic field, which can affect a nearby compass needle.
English: The combined magnetic effects of many turns give a solenoid a magnetic field pattern similar to that of a bar magnet.
English: Opposite magnetic forces on the sides of the coil produce a turning effect.
English: Rotation changes the magnetic linkage of the coil, producing induced emf and, in a closed circuit, induced current.
27. Solved Concept – Current Direction से Field Direction
Solution: Right Hand Thumb Rule.
28. Solved Concept – Motor या Generator?
29. Solved Concept – Electromagnetic Induction

43. पूरे Chapter का Final Concept
Fleming’s Right Hand Rule induced current
Right Hand Thumb Rule, Fleming Left Hand Rule, Fleming Right Hand Rule, Solenoid, Motor
