Bihar Board Class 10 Physics Chapter 4 Notes :
Resistance
Circuit Combination
Energy
Matter contains tiny particles. Electrons carry negative charge, while protons carry positive charge.
In an electric circuit, the organized movement of electric charge gives rise to electric current. Current itself is not a material substance; it describes the rate at which electric charge flows.
Current = Charge ÷ Time
I = 20 / 5 = 4 A
Electric current is measured in ampere (A). One ampere means that one coulomb of charge passes through a cross-section of a conductor in one second.
1 A = 1 C/s
Thus, if 20 C of charge passes through a conductor in 5 seconds, the current is 4 A.
In a metallic conductor, electrons are negatively charged and their drift direction is opposite to the direction assigned to conventional current. In circuit diagrams, conventional current is taken from the positive terminal of a source through the external circuit toward the negative terminal.
(Electric Circuit)
Basic Circuit
An electric circuit is a closed conducting path through which electric current can flow. A source such as a cell provides the potential difference, while wires and devices form the conducting path.
If the circuit is open, the path is broken and the current cannot continue through the complete circuit.
(Potential Difference)
Potential Difference = Work Done ÷ Charge
यहाँ V potential difference, W work done और Q charge को दर्शाता है।
Potential difference can be thought of as the electrical driving condition that enables charge to move through a circuit.
It is defined as work done per unit charge and is measured in volts.
6. Ammeter और Voltmeter
An ammeter measures current and is connected in series. A voltmeter measures potential difference across a component and is connected in parallel.
(Resistance)
Resistance
Ohm
For an ohmic conductor
- A बढ़ेगा → R घटेगा
Resistance is the opposition offered by a conductor to the flow of electric charge. For a uniform conductor:
Resistance depends on the material, length, cross-sectional area and, under ordinary conditions, temperature.
(Ohm’s Law)
V ∝ I
Proportionality
V = IR
| Symbol | Quantity | SI Unit |
|---|---|---|
| V | Potential Difference | Volt (V) |
| I | Current | Ampere (A) |
| R | Resistance | Ohm (Ω) |
I = V/R = 10/5 = 2 A
I = 20/5 = 4 A
For a conductor obeying Ohm's law under constant physical conditions, voltage and current have a linear relationship.
V = IR
If resistance remains constant, doubling voltage doubles current. Similarly, reducing voltage reduces current proportionally.
9. V-I Graph
Graph
Slope = V/I = R
For an ohmic conductor, the V-I relationship is linear when physical conditions remain constant. If voltage is plotted against current, the slope gives resistance:
R = V/I
(Resistivity)
| Resistance | Resistivity |
|---|---|
| Unit: Ω | Unit: Ω m |
Resistivity is a property associated with the material of a conductor. It helps compare how strongly different materials oppose electric current. Its SI unit is ohm metre.
Length ↑
Resistance generally increases.
Area ↑
Resistance generally decreases.
Material
Resistivity changes.
Temperature
Resistance may change with temperature.
(Series Combination)
Series
Equivalent Resistance
R = 2 + 3 + 5 = 10 Ω
In a series combination, resistors are connected one after another in a single path. The same current flows through every resistor.
Req = R₁ + R₂ + R₃ + ...
The equivalent resistance is therefore greater than any individual resistance in the combination.
(Parallel Combination)
Parallel
Equivalent Resistance
R = (6 × 3)/(6 + 3) = 18/9 = 2 Ω
In a parallel combination, current has multiple paths. The potential difference across each branch is the same, while the total current is divided among the branches.
1/Req = 1/R₁ + 1/R₂ + ...
Series | Parallel |
|---|---|---|
| Equivalent Resistance | R₁ + R₂ + ... | Reciprocal relation |
The easiest memory rule is: Series → same current and Parallel → same potential difference.
Independent Operation
Same Supply Voltage
Separate Control
Domestic appliances are connected in parallel so that each appliance receives the supply potential difference and can operate independently. Switching off one appliance does not necessarily stop the others.

17. Solved Numerical – Current
Given:
Q = 50 C
t = 10 s
Formula:
I = Q/t
Calculation:
I = 50/10 = 5 A
Since current is charge flowing per unit time:
I = Q/t = 50/10 = 5 A
Therefore, the current is 5 ampere.
18. Solved Numerical – Ohm’s Law
Given:
R = 10 Ω
V = 20 V
Formula:
V = IR
I = V/R
Calculation:
I = 20/10 = 2 A
19. Solved Numerical – Series Resistance
Series Formula:
R = R₁ + R₂ + R₃
R = 4 + 6 + 10 = 20 Ω
20. Solved Numerical – Parallel Resistance
Formula:
R = (R₁R₂)/(R₁ + R₂)
R = (6 × 3)/(6 + 3)
R = 18/9 = 2 Ω
(Electric Power)
P = W/t
P = VI
Ohm's law
Electric power is the rate at which electrical energy is transferred or converted.
P = VI
Using Ohm's law, we can also write:
P = I²R and P = V²/R
The SI unit of power is watt.
22. Electrical Rating
The watt rating of an electrical appliance indicates its power consumption under the specified operating condition. Power is a rate, not an amount of energy.
(Electrical Energy)
Electrical energy used by a device is the product of power and time:
E = Pt
The SI unit is joule. For household electricity billing, a larger practical unit is commonly used.
Commercial Unit
Kilowatt-hour (kWh)
1 kWh = 1000 W × 3600 s
1 kWh = 3.6 × 106 J
The commercial unit of electrical energy is kilowatt-hour. One kilowatt-hour is commonly called one unit of electrical energy.
1 kWh = 3.6 × 106 J
25. Solved Numerical – Electrical Energy
1000 W = 1 kW
Step 2: Formula
Energy = Power × Time
Step 3: Calculation
E = 1 kW × 2 h = 2 kWh
Electric Iron
Electrical energy → heat
Room Heater
Resistance element heat
Toaster
When electric current passes through a resistor, electrical energy can be converted into heat. This is called the heating effect of electric current.
The effect is intentionally used in heaters, irons, toasters and other resistive heating devices.
27. Joule’s Law of Heating
यदि current I किसी resistance R से time t तक गुजरती है, तो उत्पन्न heat:
Joule's law states that the heat produced in a resistor is:
H = I²Rt
Therefore, heat depends on the square of current, resistance and time.
28. Solved Numerical – Heating Effect
Given:
I = 2 A, R = 5 Ω, t = 10 s
Formula:
H = I²Rt
Calculation:
H = (2)² × 5 × 10
H = 4 × 5 × 10 = 200 J
Heating elements are designed using suitable resistive materials so that electrical energy can be converted into heat effectively. Material properties and operating temperature are also important in their design.
Fuse
Concept Flow
A fuse is a protective device. When excessive current causes the fuse element to heat beyond its safe operating condition, it can melt and open the circuit, helping protect the circuit and connected equipment.
Formula |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Current | I | Ampere | Charge flow की rate | I = Q/t |
| Potential Difference | V | Volt | Per unit charge work | V = W/Q |
| Resistance | R | Ohm | Current flow का opposition | R = V/I |
| Power | P | Watt | Energy transfer की rate | P = VI |
| Energy | E | Joule | Consumed/transferred energy | E = Pt |
| Heat | H | Joule | Resistive heating energy | H = I²Rt |
A source establishes potential difference. A closed circuit allows charge to move. The current depends on the applied potential difference and the resistance of the circuit. Current and voltage determine power, while power acting over time determines electrical energy.

39. Deep Concept Questions
Ohm's law V = IR के अनुसार I = V/R.
English: If resistance remains constant, current increases in direct proportion to voltage.
English: Additional current paths make the equivalent resistance smaller than the individual branch resistances.
English: Energy depends on both power and operating time.
यदि R और t constant रहें, तो H = I²Rt.
English: If resistance and time remain constant, doubling current makes the heat production four times.

Concept Summary
Current का value charge और time से जुड़ा है: I = Q/t.
Potential difference work done per unit charge से संबंधित है: V = W/Q.
Uniform conductor के लिए: R = ρL/A.
Power और time के आधार पर electrical energy: E = Pt.
इसका quantitative relation: H = I²Rt.
Charge → Current → Voltage → Resistance → Circuit → Power → Energy → Heating
