Bihar Board Class 10 Physics Chapter 1 Notes:
In this chapter, the focus is not simply on memorising formulas. The main goal is to understand how light behaves when it strikes a mirror, how an image is formed, why concave and convex mirrors behave differently, and how to solve numerical problems correctly using the mirror formula and magnification.
Light is a form of energy that enables us to see objects. Sources such as the Sun, a bulb, a candle and a tube light produce their own light. Most objects such as a table, book, wall or tree do not produce light themselves. They reflect the light falling on them, and the reflected light reaching our eyes allows us to see them.
We generally see an object because light falling on it is reflected towards our eyes.
The bouncing back of light into the same medium after striking a reflecting surface is called reflection of light.
For example, when light from a torch falls on a mirror, it strikes the mirror and returns in another direction. This phenomenon is called reflection.
Light comes → strikes a surface → returns = Reflection.
To understand reflection problems and ray diagrams, several basic terms must be understood clearly. Once these terms are familiar, both diagrams and numerical problems become easier.
The ray of light falling on the reflecting surface is called the incident ray.
The ray that travels away from the reflecting surface after reflection is called the reflected ray.
The point at which the incident ray strikes the reflecting surface is called the point of incidence.
A line drawn perpendicular to the reflecting surface at the point of incidence is called the normal.
The angle between the incident ray and the normal at the point of incidence is called the angle of incidence. It is represented by i.
The angle between the reflected ray and the normal is called the angle of reflection. It is represented by r.
Both the angle of incidence and the angle of reflection are measured from the normal, not from the mirror surface.
There are two fundamental laws of reflection. These laws should be understood conceptually as well as mathematically.
The incident ray, reflected ray and the normal at the point of incidence all lie in the same plane.
The angle of incidence is equal to the angle of reflection.
i = r
If a light ray strikes the mirror making an angle of 30° with the normal, the reflected ray will also make an angle of 30° with the normal on the other side.
Smooth surfaces such as a polished mirror produce regular reflection, where reflected rays remain orderly and follow a definite direction.
A mirror is a good example of regular reflection, which is why a clear image can be formed in it.
When light falls on a rough surface, the normals at different small portions of the surface have different directions. Therefore, the reflected rays spread in different directions. This is called diffuse reflection.
No. The law of reflection is not violated in diffuse reflection. The relation i = r still applies at each small point. The apparent spreading occurs because the normals at different points have different orientations.
A mirror having a flat reflecting surface is called a plane mirror. An ordinary household mirror is a common example.
- The image is virtual.
- The image is erect.
- The image is of the same size as the object.
- The image is formed behind the mirror at the same distance as the object is in front of it.
- Lateral inversion is observed.
An image that cannot be obtained on a screen is called a virtual image.
In a plane mirror, the left side of an object appears as the right side in the image and vice versa. This phenomenon is called lateral inversion.
The word AMBULANCE is written in reverse on the front of the vehicle so that it appears correctly in the rear-view mirror of the vehicle ahead, allowing the driver to recognise it quickly.
A mirror does not create an image by magic. It changes the direction of light rays. Our eyes receive the reflected rays, and the brain interprets them as if they are coming from a particular position behind the mirror.
Mirrors whose reflecting surfaces form a part of a spherical surface are called spherical mirrors.
Concave Mirror
Convex Mirror
A spherical mirror whose reflecting surface is curved inward is called a concave mirror.
A concave mirror brings parallel rays closer together after reflection and is therefore called a converging mirror.
Concave mirrors are used as shaving mirrors, dental mirrors, reflectors in torches and headlights, solar furnaces and several optical instruments.
A spherical mirror whose reflecting surface bulges outward is called a convex mirror.
A convex mirror causes parallel rays to diverge after reflection and is therefore called a diverging mirror.
Convex mirrors are commonly used as rear-view mirrors in vehicles.
A convex mirror forms a diminished but erect image and provides a wider field of view. Therefore, a driver can observe a larger region behind the vehicle.
Concave → Converging
Convex → Diverging
The important parts of spherical mirrors must be understood before studying ray diagrams, image formation and numerical problems.
Pole (P)
The midpoint of the reflecting surface of a spherical mirror is called its pole, represented by P.
Centre of Curvature (C)
The centre of the sphere of which the spherical mirror forms a part is called the centre of curvature, represented by C.
Radius of Curvature (R)
The distance between the pole P and the centre of curvature C is called the radius of curvature.
R = PC
Principal Axis
The straight line passing through the pole and centre of curvature is called the principal axis.
Principal Focus (F)
The point on the principal axis where rays parallel to the principal axis meet after reflection from a concave mirror is called its principal focus.
In a convex mirror, the reflected rays do not actually meet. However, their backward extensions appear to meet at a point behind the mirror. This is the virtual focus of the convex mirror.
Focal Length (f)
The distance between the pole P and the principal focus F is called the focal length.
f = PF
For a spherical mirror under the paraxial approximation, the radius of curvature and focal length are related by:
R = 2f
f = R/2
For example, if the radius of curvature of a mirror is 40 cm, the magnitude of its focal length will be 20 cm.
Numerical
In numerical problems, do not only divide R by 2. The sign of focal length must also be assigned according to the sign convention.
Certain standard rays are extremely important in ray diagrams. Understanding their behaviour makes image formation diagrams much easier.
A ray parallel to the principal axis of a concave mirror passes through the principal focus F after reflection.
A ray passing through the principal focus of a concave mirror becomes parallel to the principal axis after reflection.
A ray passing through the centre of curvature C retraces its path after reflection because it strikes the mirror normally.
A ray striking the pole P obeys the law of reflection, so its angle of incidence is equal to its angle of reflection.
In a convex mirror, parallel rays diverge after reflection. When the reflected rays are extended backward, they appear to originate from a point near the focus.
Therefore, the focus and centre of curvature of a convex mirror are considered to lie behind the mirror.
The most important feature of a concave mirror is that the position, size and nature of the image can change when the position of the object changes.
When an object is considered to be at infinity, the rays reaching the mirror are approximately parallel. A concave mirror brings them to the principal focus F.
- The image is formed at F.
- The image is real.
- The image is inverted.
- The image is highly diminished.
If the object is placed beyond C, the image is formed between C and F.
- Real
- Inverted
- Diminished
- Between C and F
When the object is placed at C, the image is also formed at C.
- Real
- Inverted
- Same size as the object
- At C
When the object is placed between C and F, the image is formed beyond C. The image is real, inverted and enlarged.
When the object is placed at the focus F, the reflected rays become parallel. Therefore, the image is considered to be formed at infinity.
- Image infinity
- Image at infinity
- Real and inverted
- Highly magnified
This is an important case. When the object is placed between the pole P and focus F, the reflected rays diverge, but their backward extensions appear to meet behind the mirror.
- The image is virtual.
- The image is erect.
- The image is magnified.
- The image is formed behind the mirror.
As the object moves from beyond C towards P, the image generally moves farther away and becomes larger. Once the object moves inside F, the image becomes virtual, erect and magnified.
Image Formation Table
This table is one of the most useful revision tools for concave mirror image formation. Students should understand the pattern rather than memorising the six rows mechanically.
For a normal object, a convex mirror generally produces an image behind the mirror. The image remains virtual and erect.
- Image virtual
- Image erect
- Image diminished
- Image mirror
- The image is virtual.
- The image is erect.
- The image is diminished.
- The image is formed behind the mirror.
- For a very distant object, the image approaches the focus.
Many students think of real and virtual images simply as images formed in front of or behind a mirror. The deeper difference is whether the reflected rays actually meet or only appear to meet when extended backward.
A real image is formed when light rays actually meet at a point. A real image can be obtained on a screen.
A virtual image is formed when rays do not actually meet, but their backward extensions appear to meet at a point. Such an image cannot be obtained on a screen.
An image that has the same upright orientation as the object is called erect. An image formed upside down is called inverted.
For most object positions in front of a concave mirror, the image is real and inverted. When the object lies inside the focal length, the image becomes virtual, erect and magnified.
20. Cartesian Sign Convention
Most mistakes in mirror-formula numerical problems occur because of incorrect signs. Understanding the sign convention is therefore more important than simply memorising the formula.
The Cartesian sign convention is used for spherical mirrors.
- All distances are measured from the pole.
- Distances measured in the direction of incident light are taken as positive.
- Distances measured opposite to the direction of incident light are taken as negative.
- Heights above the principal axis are positive.
- Heights below the principal axis are negative.
Under the standard Cartesian convention, the focal length of a concave mirror is generally negative because its focus lies in front of the mirror.
The focus of a convex mirror lies behind the mirror, so its focal length is positive under the standard Cartesian sign convention.
21. Mirror Formula
The relation between object distance, image distance and focal length for a spherical mirror is called the mirror formula.
1/f = 1/v + 1/u
- f = focal length
- v = image distance
- u = object distance
Here:
- f = focal length
- v = image distance
- u = object distance
Do not substitute numbers immediately. First determine the signs of u, v and f, and only then use the mirror formula.
22. Magnification
The ratio of the height of the image to the height of the object is called magnification.
m = hi / ho
m = -v/u
जहाँ hi image height और ho object height है।
Here, hi represents image height and ho represents object height.
Magnification
If |m| > 1, the image is enlarged.
If |m| = 1, the image and object are of the same size.
If |m| < 1, the image is diminished.
Under the standard sign convention, positive magnification indicates an erect image, while negative magnification indicates an inverted image.
Do not treat a physics numerical as mere calculation. First identify what is given, what is required and which formula connects them.
- Required quantity
- Correct formula
- Values substitute करें।
- Calculation
- Write the given quantities.
- Assign signs according to the sign convention.
- Identify the required quantity.
- Write the correct formula.
- Substitute the values.
- Perform the calculation.
- Write the unit with the final answer.
- Interpret the result physically whenever possible.
24. Numerical Example 1
A concave mirror has a focal length of 10 cm and an object is placed 30 cm in front of it. Find the image distance.
Concave mirror
f = -10 cm
Object mirror
u = -30 cm
Mirror formula:
1/f = 1/v + 1/u
-1/10 = 1/v - 1/30
अत:
1/v = -1/10 + 1/30
1/v = -3/30 + 1/30 = -2/30 = -1/15
v = -15 cm
The negative sign indicates that the image is formed in front of the mirror, so the image is real.
25. Numerical Example 2: Magnification
किसी spherical mirror में object distance -20 cm और image distance -40 cm है। Magnification ज्ञात करें।
For a spherical mirror, the object distance is -20 cm and image distance is -40 cm. Find the magnification.
m = -v/u
m = -(-40)/(-20)
m = 40/(-20)
m = -2
The magnitude of magnification is 2, so the image is twice the size of the object. The negative sign indicates that the image is inverted.
26. Numerical Example 3: Radius से focal length
किसी spherical mirror की radius of curvature 60 cm है।
The radius of curvature of a spherical mirror is 60 cm. Find its focal length.
f = R/2
f = 60/2
f = 30 cm
For a concave mirror, the focal length is -30 cm under the standard convention. For a convex mirror, it is +30 cm.
27. Numerical Example 4: Mirror Formula से focal length
किसी spherical mirror में object distance -30 cm और image distance -60 cm है। Focal length ज्ञात करें।
For a spherical mirror, u = -30 cm and v = -60 cm. Find the focal length.
1/f = 1/v + 1/u
1/f = -1/60 - 1/30
1/f = -1/60 - 2/60
1/f = -3/60 = -1/20
f = -20 cm
The negative focal length indicates that the mirror is concave under the standard convention.
A concave mirror has an inward-curved reflecting surface and converges parallel rays. A convex mirror has an outward-curved reflecting surface and diverges parallel rays.
When the face is placed between the pole and focus of a concave mirror, the image becomes virtual, erect and magnified. Therefore, facial details appear larger and grooming becomes easier.
A concave mirror can produce a magnified and erect virtual image when the tooth is placed within the focal length, making details easier for a dentist to observe.
When a light source is placed near the focus of a concave mirror, the reflected rays can become approximately parallel. This helps direct light over a longer distance in headlights and torches.
Sunlight reaching Earth can be treated approximately as parallel rays. A concave mirror can concentrate these rays near its focus, producing a high concentration of solar energy.
33. Ray Diagram
A ray diagram is not merely a drawing. It is a visual method of understanding how light behaves.
- Draw the principal axis.
- Draw the mirror correctly.
- Mark P, F and C.
- Place the object according to the question.
- Draw at least two standard rays from the top of the object.
- Observe the reflected rays.
- Locate the image where the rays meet or appear to meet.
- State the nature and size of the image.
Although many rays can travel from an object to a mirror, two convenient standard rays are usually enough to locate the image. Their point of intersection determines the image position.
This is why drawing two clear standard rays is usually sufficient in board-exam ray diagrams.
The inward curvature of a concave mirror causes convergence, while the outward curvature of a convex mirror causes divergence.
Connection 2: Object position → Image nature
In a concave mirror, changing the object position can change the nature of the image. This is one of the most important patterns in the chapter.
Connection 3: Magnification → Image size
Magnification is not just a formula. Its magnitude directly indicates whether the image is enlarged, equal in size or diminished.
Connection 4: Sign → Physical meaning
A negative sign in a numerical answer is not necessarily an error. It often carries important information about image position or orientation.
Angles of incidence and reflection are measured from the normal.
Remember: concave curves inward and convex bulges outward.
Writing the formula correctly is not enough. The signs of u, v and f must also be correct.
It is better to understand whether the rays actually meet or only appear to meet.
Negative magnification generally indicates an inverted image.
If the question asks only for the laws of reflection, there is no need to write an unnecessarily long answer. State both laws clearly and correctly.
- The incident ray, reflected ray and normal at the point of incidence lie in the same plane.
- The angle of incidence is equal to the angle of reflection, i.e. i = r.
Understanding the reason behind each application is more useful than memorising a list.
- Shaving mirror — magnified erect image
- Headlight — parallel beam
- Shaving mirror — because it can provide a magnified erect image.
- Dental mirror — because it can provide a magnified view.
- Headlight — because it helps produce a directed beam.
- Solar furnace — because it can concentrate sunlight.
इसका कारण है wide field of view और diminished erect image।
Its most important application is in vehicle rear-view mirrors because it provides a wide field of view and forms a diminished erect image.
Surface → Reflection → Ray direction → Mirror type → Image position → Image nature
Instead of memorising isolated facts, build a logical chain: surface → reflection → ray direction → mirror type → image position → image nature. This makes the chapter easier to understand and recall.

Concept Check
No. A plane mirror forms a virtual image. A convex mirror generally forms a virtual image. A concave mirror can form either a real or virtual image depending on object position.
No. The size of the image depends on the position of the object.
For a normal real object, a convex mirror forms a diminished, virtual and erect image.
No. The rays do not actually meet at the apparent image position.
The image is inverted and its size is three times the size of the object.
43. Last-Minute Revision Strategy
Before an examination, instead of rereading the entire chapter, revise these points in sequence.

A good physics answer is not necessarily a long answer. It should contain the correct concept, formula, diagram and conclusion wherever required.
If a ray diagram is asked, a paragraph alone is not sufficient. For numerical problems, show the formula and substitution rather than writing only the final answer.

Once this complete chain is understood, the chapter no longer feels like a collection of unrelated facts. The concepts become connected and easier to remember.
46. Final Concept Summary
Reflection of light is not merely the phenomenon of seeing our face in a mirror. It is a fundamental optical phenomenon used in mirrors, reflectors, headlights, rear-view mirrors and many optical devices.
The foundation of the chapter is the two laws of reflection. After that, plane mirrors and spherical mirrors should be understood. Concave and convex mirrors have different behaviours.
In a concave mirror, object position is the key. By understanding the relationship between C, F and P, the position, size and nature of the image can be determined logically.
1/f = 1/v + 1/u
m = -v/u = hi/ho
However, the sign convention is just as important as the formulas themselves. Once the signs are assigned correctly, numerical problems become much easier.
Chapter
Reflection occurs when light returns into the same medium after striking a reflecting surface; the shape of the mirror and the position of the object determine where the image forms, what type it is, and how large it is.
To prepare this chapter effectively, do not memorise definitions alone. Draw the ray diagrams yourself, solve mirror-formula numericals and repeatedly ask, “Why is the image formed this way?” That question turns memorisation into genuine conceptual understanding.
