Human Eye, Atmospheric Refraction and Dispersion of Light

The best way to study this chapter is to understand why each phenomenon occurs. Many questions are based on reasoning rather than simple memorisation.

We use our eyes every day to read books, recognise faces, observe distant objects and look at stars. These experiences are possible because of the interaction between light, the human eye and the atmosphere.

The chapter explains how the eye forms an image, how it focuses on objects at different distances, why common vision defects occur, why light bends in the atmosphere, why stars twinkle and why white light separates into different colours through a prism.

The human eye is a highly sensitive optical organ that helps us see objects. It does not merely receive light; it controls the amount of light entering the eye, focuses the light, and forms an image on the retina.

The eye can be compared with a natural camera. Light enters the eye, the lens focuses it, and an image is formed on a light-sensitive surface called the retina.

Different parts of the human eye perform different functions. Understanding these parts makes accommodation and vision defects much easier to understand.

Cornea

The cornea is the transparent outer covering of the eye. Light enters the eye through the cornea, which contributes significantly to the refraction of incoming light.

Iris

The iris is the coloured part of the eye. It controls the size of the pupil and therefore helps regulate the amount of light entering the eye.

Pupil

The pupil is the opening in the centre of the iris through which light enters the eye.

Eye Lens

The eye lens is a transparent and flexible lens. Its main function is to focus incoming light onto the retina.

Ciliary Muscles

Ciliary muscles change the curvature of the eye lens, allowing the eye to focus on objects at different distances.

Retina

The retina is a light-sensitive layer at the back of the eye. The optical image of an object is formed on the retina.

Optic Nerve

The optic nerve carries visual information from the retina to the brain.

Cornea Lens Retina Optic nerve Pupil

The actual human eye is more complex than this simplified diagram. The diagram is intentionally simplified so that students can connect each part with its function.

Light rays entering the eye are refracted by the cornea and eye lens. The lens focuses these rays on the retina, where a real and inverted image is formed.

The image formed on the retina is inverted, but the brain processes the visual signals and gives us the correct visual perception. Therefore, the world does not appear upside down.

The eye can focus clearly on both nearby and distant objects because the eye lens can change its curvature. This ability is called accommodation.

When viewing a distant object, the eye lens becomes relatively flatter. Its focal length increases, allowing the image to be focused on the retina.

When viewing a nearby object, the ciliary muscles increase the curvature of the lens. The lens becomes more curved and its focal length decreases.

Focal Length

The nearest point at which a normal eye can see an object clearly without excessive strain is called the near point. It is conventionally taken as about 25 cm.

The farthest point up to which a normal eye can see clearly is called the far point. For a normal eye, it is practically at infinity.

A vision defect occurs when the eye cannot properly focus an object's image on the retina or requires optical correction to see clearly.

Myopia
  2. दूर दृष्टिदोष — Hypermetropia
  3. जरा-दूरदृष्टिता — Presbyopia

Myopia

In myopia, a person can see nearby objects clearly but distant objects appear blurred. Therefore, it is called short-sightedness or near-sightedness.

Image

In a myopic eye, rays from a distant object converge before reaching the retina. Therefore, the image is formed in front of the retina.

Myopia

Myopia may occur because the converging power of the eye is too high or because the eyeball is longer than normal.

Myopia is corrected using a concave lens. The concave lens diverges the incoming rays appropriately so that the eye can focus the image on the retina.

In myopia, the eye converges light too much → we need additional divergence → therefore a concave lens is used.

In hypermetropia, distant objects can be seen clearly but nearby objects are difficult to see clearly. It is called long-sightedness or far-sightedness.

Image

The eye cannot converge light from a nearby object sufficiently. Therefore, the image tends to form behind the retina.

Hypermetropia

Hypermetropia may result from insufficient converging power of the eye, a shorter eyeball, or inadequate accommodation.

Correction

Hypermetropia is corrected using a convex lens, which provides additional convergence before the light enters the eye.

In hypermetropia, the eye does not converge light enough → additional convergence is required → therefore a convex lens is used.

With age, the flexibility of the eye lens may decrease and the ability of the ciliary muscles to accommodate may weaken. This can make it difficult to focus on nearby objects. This condition is called presbyopia.

Correction

A suitable convex lens may be used when only near vision is affected. When both near and distant vision need correction, bifocal or suitable multifocal lenses may be used.

Correction
Concave lens
Convex lens
Suitable corrective lens

The Earth's atmosphere is not a uniform medium. Temperature and density change with altitude, so the optical properties of different atmospheric layers are different.

As light travels through atmospheric layers with different optical properties, its path changes gradually. This phenomenon is called atmospheric refraction.

Just as light can change direction when passing through layers of water with different optical properties, atmospheric layers can continuously refract light as well.

The apparent twinkling of stars is a well-known example of atmospheric refraction. Light from a star passes through atmospheric layers whose density keeps changing.

Because of these changing atmospheric conditions, the apparent direction and intensity of starlight reaching the eye keep changing slightly. As a result, stars appear to twinkle.

Important Concept

A star appears almost like a point source because of its enormous distance. Small atmospheric changes can therefore produce noticeable variations in its apparent brightness.

Planets are much closer to Earth and appear to have a larger angular size than stars. Their light reaches us from an extended source rather than an almost point-like source.

Atmospheric fluctuations affect different rays from the planet in different ways, and these effects tend to average out. Therefore, planets generally appear steadier than stars.

Normally, the Sun should not be visible when it is geometrically below the horizon. However, atmospheric refraction bends the path of sunlight, allowing the rays to reach our eyes.

Therefore, the Sun can appear slightly higher than its actual geometric position. This makes sunrise appear a little earlier and sunset a little later.

Sunrise

Atmospheric refraction can make the Sun visible slightly before its geometric sunrise.

Sunset

Similarly, the Sun may remain visible for a short time after its geometric sunset.

Dispersion of Light

Sunlight or white light is not a single colour. It contains different colours. When white light passes through a suitable prism and its constituent colours separate into different directions, the phenomenon is called dispersion of light.

White Light → Spectrum

White Light → Red Orange Yellow Green Blue Indigo Violet

The band of colours obtained after dispersion is called a spectrum.

A prism is a transparent optical element whose refracting surfaces are not parallel. This geometry causes light to change direction as it passes through the prism.

When white light enters a prism, the refractive index is different for different colours. Therefore, all colours are not deviated by the same amount.

Different colours have different wavelengths and experience different refractive behaviour in the prism. Therefore, white light spreads into its constituent colours.

White Light Prism Red Violet

In the diagram, white light enters the prism and emerges with different colours travelling in different directions. This separation is called dispersion.

19. Spectrum

Red Orange Yellow Green Blue Indigo Violet

VIBGYOR

The mnemonic VIBGYOR is commonly used to remember the order of the visible spectrum.

However, understanding that different colours are deviated by different amounts is more important than simply memorising the sequence.

Different colours have different refractive indices in a prism. Generally, violet light is deviated more than red light, while red light is deviated less.

Least deviation
Violet अधिक Maximum deviation

A rainbow is produced by optical effects involving sunlight and water droplets in the atmosphere.

When sunlight enters a water droplet, it is refracted. Light may then undergo reflection inside the droplet and is refracted again while emerging. Dispersion separates the colours, producing the visible rainbow.

22. Primary Rainbow

A primary rainbow is the common rainbow usually observed after rainfall. Red generally appears on the outer side while violet appears on the inner side.

A primary rainbow involves an important internal reflection of light inside the water droplet.

Scattering of Light

When light interacts with small particles such as gas molecules, dust or other tiny particles in the atmosphere and is redirected in different directions, the phenomenon is called scattering of light.

Scattering produces several beautiful optical effects in the atmosphere, including the blue appearance of the sky and reddish colours during sunrise and sunset.

Sunlight appears white but contains many wavelengths. Small particles in the atmosphere scatter shorter-wavelength light more strongly. In the visible spectrum, blue light is scattered more strongly than red light.

This scattered blue light reaches our eyes from many directions, making the sky appear blue.

The sky is not blue because the atmosphere itself is blue. Its blue appearance is caused by the scattering of sunlight.

During sunrise and sunset, sunlight travels through a relatively longer path in the atmosphere. Shorter-wavelength colours undergo stronger scattering along this path.

As a result, the direct sunlight reaching our eyes can become relatively richer in red and orange wavelengths, making the Sun appear reddish.

26. Tyndall Effect

When light passes through a medium containing very small suspended particles and the particles scatter the light so that the path of the beam becomes visible, the phenomenon is called the Tyndall effect.

A familiar example is the visible path of sunlight entering a dusty room through a window. A light beam may also become visible in smoke or mist.

Mirror
Prism
Blue sky

These four phenomena should not be treated as the same process. Their physical causes and mechanisms are different.

First, the eye receives light. The cornea and lens refract the light and form an image on the retina. Ciliary muscles help accommodation by changing the shape of the lens.

If the eye cannot focus properly, vision defects such as myopia, hypermetropia or presbyopia may occur.

When light travels through the atmosphere, atmospheric refraction can make stars appear to twinkle and can alter the apparent times of sunrise and sunset.

When white sunlight passes through a prism or water droplets, different colours can separate into different directions. This helps explain dispersion and rainbow formation.

Atmospheric refraction causes the apparent path and intensity of starlight to vary, making stars appear to twinkle.

Atmospheric particles scatter shorter-wavelength blue light more strongly, and the scattered blue light reaches our eyes from different directions.

Water droplets refract, internally reflect and refract sunlight again. Different colours are deviated by different amounts, producing dispersion.

In myopia, rays converge before reaching the retina. A concave lens adds divergence, helping shift the focus back onto the retina.

A hypermetropic eye does not provide sufficient convergence. A convex lens adds convergence and helps the image form on the retina.

Remember the physical reason instead of memorising only the pair.

Refraction changes the path of light, while scattering redirects light through interactions with small particles.

Rainbow involves refraction, dispersion and internal reflection in water droplets.

The lens focuses light; the retina receives the focused optical image.

13. Tyndall effect

The usual atmospheric twinkling effect is caused by changing optical conditions in the atmosphere. Without an atmosphere, this particular effect would not occur.

No. If all wavelengths were deviated by exactly the same amount, the colours would not separate spatially and visible dispersion would not occur.

Focusing on objects at different distances would become difficult because the eye would lose its ability to accommodate effectively.

The human eye is an optical system in which the cornea, pupil, iris, eye lens, ciliary muscles and retina perform important functions. Light enters the eye, is refracted by the optical system and forms an image on the retina.

The ability of the eye lens to change its curvature is called accommodation. The near point of a normal eye is taken as about 25 cm, while its far point is practically at infinity.

Myopia makes distant objects unclear and is corrected using a concave lens. Hypermetropia makes nearby objects unclear and is corrected using a convex lens. Presbyopia is associated with reduced accommodation with age.

Different atmospheric layers can change the path of light, producing atmospheric refraction. This explains effects such as the apparent twinkling of stars and changes in the apparent timing of sunrise and sunset.

White light consists of different colours. Since different colours are deviated by different amounts in a prism, dispersion occurs and a spectrum is produced.

Water droplets can produce a rainbow through processes involving refraction, dispersion and internal reflection of sunlight.

Scattering of light by small atmospheric particles helps explain phenomena such as the blue sky and reddish colours during sunrise and sunset.

Do not study this chapter only through memory tricks such as VIBGYOR or lens pairs. First understand where the light travels, where it bends, where it focuses and what happens when it interacts with particles.
